In 2009 I signed up for two journal projects.  The first one is The Sketchbook Project, sponsored by the Art House. Each artist received a Moleskin notebook to fill and return by the end of the year. Themes were assigned randomly, and mine was “My Life In a Yellow Submarine.”  What?  That was so far from the usual concepts that I create art about. I ended up doing a literal interpretation, following the lyrics of the Beatles’ song with images and calligraphy.

The pages were coated with a thin layer of gesso, then a layer of acrylic paint over that. Then I added inkjet transfers, lettering and collage elements. Here are a few pages:

The second project is an ongoing traveling journal sponsored by 1001 Journals.  Here are the pages that I did before sending my book on:

Thanks for looking. Next week I will upload the photos of a large painting that was just completed.

  1. I like what you did with yellow submarine. I also signed up for the sketchbook project, thinking it would be great to have a theme to jump start my thinking. However, my theme was “You are Me”. Say what?? I was never so happy to be finished with a project in my life! haha.
Love your pages in 1000 Journals!

  2. What great fun! And what awesome lettering! I am a beginner calligrapher and am bowled over by your work. Great ideas for the “Yellow Submarine”. I just received the 1001 Journal book this past year and adore it. It has become my bedtime reading material. You have inspired me to create more journals. I have one traveling journal out and about now “Script It!”, but want to do more. Thanks for sharing your artwork and lettering. “)
